A fabulous novel. The story of Cyril from conception to his old age with so much humour, humility and unmistakably Irish. Cyril is so personable & likeable as we understand his childhood with adoptive parents (always stressed, he is not s proper Avery). Not only Cyril's story though it's a history of Ireland from the 1940's to present day, clearly stating the rampant inequality, religious intolerance, attitudes to homosexuality and LGBT issues. The power and influence that the Catholic Church had and probably still has in Ireland is clearly shown. The shocking cruelty of the Catholic Church in the opening chapter and the awful incident to Mrs Hennessy and what happened to her baby. By the end Cyril despite everything he's been through finds some happiness, a story of love, misery, heartache and hope, highly recommended and much to discuss if chosen for a BC read.
